The Scarecrow Trail started back in 2002 as a way to help pay for the village hall extension and running costs. In 2007 we decided to split any funds raised between the village hall and a nominated charity. We have always chosen one based on connections to the village. Diabetes UK when we lost a well loved villager to diabetes, East Midlands Air Ambulance in recognition of the support they gave a villager suffering from dementia, Prostate Cancer UK after the loss of a well known and well loved member of our community.
Over the years we have raised nearly £29,000. Over £12,000 of that has gone to nominated charities. In addition, nearly £3,000 has been donated to the Brownies, Guides and other groups who use the village hall. The remainder has been used to maintain and refurbish the building.
So when you enter your Scarecrow in the trail, when you buy a trail programme or a cup of tea and a cake, when you come along for a boogie, chilli and a glass of wine at our evening do...you know you're supporting something that really makes a difference in the life of our community and contributes to our charitable donations.
We always need more scarecrows! If you live outside of Weston on Trent, but would like to make a scarecrow, you will be made very welcome. We always need 'fill in' scarecrows for quieter areas in the trail. They will also be a part of the competition!
